All Things Being Equal

In the States, we’re heading into a midterm election in early November. If you’re in the States, please vote for your own best interest and for the common good. When signing the 1965 Voting Rights Act amendments in 1982, Ronald Reagan commented, “As I’ve said before, the right to vote is the crown jewel of American liberties, and we will not see its luster diminished.” If you’re elsewhere in the world, use your voice and actions to claim your equality and human dignity.

Your inalienable rights: equality and liberty affirmed

In the States, we’re celebrating the 4th of July. It’s my favorite holiday but probably not for the reason you think. On the 4th, I give thanks for freedom even as I pursue its expansion in my life and yours. The 4th of July remembers the signing in 1776 of the American Declaration of Independence, one of the most amazing and principled political documents ever crafted.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness, . . . “

For the signers of the Declaration, life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are Nature’s sacred rights bestowed upon all people whatever their color, sex, age or socioeconomic class. Simply by being born. Just for being human. Just because you’re alive. And these rights are actionable principles of a self-evident truth.

Unfortunately, the Declaration’s principles, however true and precious, have not played out in U.S. history and politics, at home or abroad, by creating equal opportunities and advancing freedom for all people. However imperfect its historic enactment may have been, let’s focus today on its sublime promise.

This energy healing mini-session connects all of us to our inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. When the great singer and composer of the Civil Rights Movement Nina Simone was asked what freedom felt like, she paused and said, “No fear . . . no fear.” So to claim our freedom and our power, we begin by releasing fear: safety is fear’s flip. Energetically, fear would keep us estranged from our inalienable rights to freedom, equality, success, prosperity, health and the goodness of life.

It is my inalienable right to grow and expand into the happiness and fullness of life. It’s safe for me to pursue a full life and all its happiness.

  • I have a balance of giving and receiving good abundance in my life. I give and receive love today.
  • I trust and feel safe that life works out for my highest good now and always. Everyone has my best interest at heart.
  • I allow, accept and receive all of grace’s gifts and blessings. I am grateful to be alive today. It is my joy and pleasure to live another wonderful day.

Danielle Allen in her book Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality writes about the Declaration’s signers’ intent: “From the facts [inalienable Rights], people are simply wired, as are all animals, to seek their survival, freedom and happiness, and, second, human beings use governments as their central instrument for protecting their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.” (p. 164)

As human beings, we are political creatures as well as divine beings. I urge you in claiming your inalienable right to “use politics to seek and find survival, freedom and happiness” (Allen. p. 163). If you’re in the States, please vote this coming November in your own best interest. If you’re elsewhere in the world, use your voice for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

“Worrying is praying for what you don’t want.”

I once read this in a travel log of all places. But it’s really about the journey of life, of course.

Worrying leads you to fear things that are not happening now and to anticipate catastrophe, failure and disappointment at some point in the future. When anxiety keeps you awake at night or prevents you from taking obvious action to enrich your life, then worrying is distorting your evaluation of the situation at hand. 

The danger of this false urgency is not just the stress to your body and wellbeing. The danger is that you are creating exactly what you don’t want by focusing your attention on your fears. You are essentially praying for what you don’t want.

Staying centered, grounded and present becomes important to redirect your thoughts and calm yourself. You are then more likely to respond appropriately to the immediate present and find more pleasure in your daily life. At any moment, you can choose to change your energetic stance from what you don’t want to what you do want. 

I’m for that. How about you? And here are some fear-busting affirmations to quiet mind-chatter and shift you to a worry-free energetic stance:

Practice is perfect

“Confidence isn’t something we have. It’s something we practice”, writes Sylvia Boorstein. You need to practice confidence just like you would yoga or baseball or the piano. Practice is perfect.

Self-confidence hasn’t been my strong suit all these years. In fact, many have been puzzled by the gap between my accomplishments and my sense of self. Lack of confidence has paralyzed me for years.

What I’ve been learning recently is that if I stay rooted in the present moment — in mindfulness which is a practice — I am confident. I have new-found faith in my abilities to handle whatever situation comes up. I am optimistic about new opportunities and new adventures turning out well. This spurs me on to accomplishment. I take good action and step forward without fear and self-doubt. My laughter is easy and my sense of humor foremost.  

This practice brings me to my heart, to its wisdom and its compassion.

And, best of all, my practice doesn’t have to be perfect. Just practicing is perfect enough. I only have to do whatever I can manage. Once a day, twice a day, three times a day. Just for today.

Here are affirmations activated and power-packed with healing intention for you. Sit with your feet planted on the floor and feel the connection brtween your feet and the floor. When your dreams turn to dust, vacuum

After the last energy healing mini-session, so many of you wrote telling me how it was just what you needed. Thank you! I was so touched by your kind remarks. You are all so wonderful and dear. And so deserving of the sweetness of life.

For decades, I’ve had a rubber stamp that reads:

When your dreams turn to dust . . . vacuum

It’s a message about resilience in the face of disappointment. It’s about taking action — even the most mundane of household tasks — to regroup and rebound. Few of us are lucky enough to never experience adversity of any sort. How we perceive the challenges and issues in our lives — whether we view them as stumbling blocks or stepping stones — is a choice and a measure of our resilience. “Frame adversity as a challenge, and you become more flexible and able to deal with it, move on, learn from it, and grow.”*

In fact, if we didn’t have challenges and life lessons, we’d be bored zoo animals. All of us living right now are here to heal ourselves and thereby raise the collective good: none of us has a monopoly on wrestling with and working through our disappointment, trauma and pain. Stressful or traumatic events in your life are no predictor of your bright future: you deserve a good life and are capable of transforming pain into happiness. Feeling bad isn’t being bad: you are always good enough.  I work with clients who want to use their creative strengths and talents to improve their lives and I get to help them do that successfully.

I want to be clear that I respect your story of trauma and pain. I’m not interested in denying it or changing it. I do want to help connect you to a Love so great, so perfect that it loves even your pain. I want to help take the electric charge off that story so you can move forward with your life. As Carl Jung said, “I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become.”

Sing a song of yourself or, at least, hum a tune

So good to be in touch with you again. These past two years, as I have grown and healed myself, my energy work has expanded hugely and powerfully. I’m now even more ready to share that healing power with you. And I want to acknowledge how absolutely magnificent you are right now, just the way you are, just for being you. In Song of Myself, Walt Whitman, the great American poet, writes:

Whitman’s inquisitive, observing and restful stand gives him an energetic stance that opens up choices and opportunities for who he wants to be when he engages with others. Last month, Banksyny did great graffeti art in New York City and created, among other things, an alternative  bumper sticker slogan:

the grumpier you are, the more assholes you meet

Ain’t that so? You are where your thoughts are. So go take a walk. Notice someone or something of beauty, kindness or pleasure. Find one morsel of gratitude for someone or something in your life. You will shift out of grumpiness. Your day will radically change as you meet more and more lovely people. No more assholes!

Lose a job, regain your spirit

We lose heart when we lose a job involuntarily. When I lost a job, it was catastrophic, cutting to the heart of who I thought I was.  (And then there was the financial worry.) I felt perplexed, paralyzed, worthless and unappreciated. And I felt misjudged and angry, blaming others and finding excuses for why this unfortunate thing happened to me.

You can make a job transition become a personal transformation, drawing upon resilience, imagination and power you didn’t know you possessed. And what if the job loss is really a blessing bringing you more fully into your life-mission?

How you use a job loss as a stepping stone to your greater success allows you to enjoy more heart-felt meaning in your work and life.

I work in a place that is safe and secure. I respect my co-workers, superiors and clients, and they respect me and my work. I attract clients/employer/employees/colleagues/partners that support me.

I am wealthy and prosperous. I enjoy good abundance in all aspects of my life. It’s okay with God/Universe/Divine Mother/Great Something for me to have money. I am worthy and deserving of wealth and prosperity. It is safe. I give myself permission.

Beyond grief and grieving

We lose heart when a loved one dies. How you allow yourself to move through grief for the loss of a loved one allows you to regain your heart.

Debra L HammondTwo days after selling the family business, my brother suddenly and inexplicably died. I was plunged into a tsunami of feelings. Anger at the foolish way he died. Disbelief that my little brother wouldn’t always be here. Regret that I hadn’t reached out to him more. Incredulity that he never enjoyed a nanosecond of early retirement in his favorite place on earth. Survivor’s guilt that he had worn himself out in service to the family business when I had refused decades ago. Despair and despair and despair at my loss.

Slowly my grieving metabolizes into love. Love and forgiveness for myself and for my family. Gratitude for the amazing, completely unique person my brother continues to be in my life. Comfort as the loving ties between my family and me deepen and expand. Joy and pride at the many, many stories about how much difference my brother made in other people’s lives. Appreciation at the new friendships forming with his dear friends.

Courage to pursue new endeavors. Strength to find a new self-expression and more authentic way of being for myself, garnered somehow from grieving for and learning from my brother. New blessings and insights into the power of love.

Here are some affirmations set with intention to help heal the grieving heart:

Now and always I am connected to my loved one. I am worthy and deserving of my loved one’s time, attention and love.

I am connected to myself, to this life, to this moment. I am connected body and spirit.

I am open to finding comfort, support and solace in the company of others. I am greeted by love wherever I go. I seek and find the support I need and want. It’s okay. I give myself permission.

I am always in the right place, at the right time, with the right people, doing and saying the right thing. My loved one is always in the right place, at the right time.

I am always divinely guided and protected. I move through life and know that I am safe. My future is secure. My loved one is always divinely guided and protected. I give myself the gift of freedom from the past and move with joy into the present.

Falling in love

Probably all of us love falling in love, perhaps even more than being in love. What if you could do both with impunity by falling in love with yourself?

For the past five years, I’ve had this quote from Rumi over my desk and wondered what he meant:

If you become the one you long for, what will you do with your longing?

I think, Rumi tells us, that when you fall in love with yourself, you reclaim your heart. Instead of seeking someone else to complete you, you complete yourself, loving and honoring yourself for being exactly who you are right now. You become the great love of your heart just by being who you are. What if you are the only one you seek and the only one to seek?

And what if you already ARE that lovable, perfect self, deserving of unconditional love? Then, your longing dissolves into pure and simple love.

Here are some affirmations set with intention to help you begin a life-long love affair with yourself:

I am connected to myself. I am connected to my life. I am connected spirit and body. I am connected to God/Universe/Divine Mother/Great Something. I am connected to infinite Love.

I love myself unconditionally. It is safe. It is okay with God/Universe/Divine Mother/Great Something. I give myself permission. I love my life.

I am worthy and deserving of unconditional love. I am capable of maintaining unconditional love for myself.

I honor who I am and who I am becoming.

I love and accept myself exactly as I am. I no longer wait to be perfect to love myself.

Calming ourselves down

Our fight-or-flight response is vital to the species and to us individually. It is the rapid response that alerts us to danger and gets us out of it. For more and more people, however, anxiety is becoming a way of life. Anxiety triggers in us a fight-or-flight response that’s inappropriately activated and overactivated.

Anxiety leads us to fear things that are not happening now, to anticipate catastrophe, failure and disappointment. When anxiety keeps us awake at night or from taking obvious action to enrich our lives, then anticipated fears and expected harm distort our evaluation of the situation at hand. The danger is not just the stress of anxiety or a false urgency. As the mystical rabbis say, we are where our thoughts are: anxious thoughts can actually create in our lives the very things we most dread.

Staying centered, grounded and present become important ways to redirect our thoughts and calm our bodies. We are then more likely to respond appropriately to the immediate present and find more pleasure in our daily lives.

Here is a simple exercise we can do to calm ourselves down when we feel anxious. The triple warmer meridian runs from the front of the ear, around the ear, down the neck, shoulder and arm, and out the ring finger on each side of the body. The triple warmer meridians govern the appropriate fight, flight or freeze response to threat. Sometimes, however, when we become anxious, our fight-or-flight response becomes overactivated. We can recalibrate the triple warmer to slow down and balance appropriately our response to outside stimuli.*

Instruction: Taking your opposite hand, run your fingers around your ear, down your neck, across your shoulder and down your arm with a flick off your ring finger. You can repeat 1-3 times until you feel a calming energy in your arm and core. Then repeat on the other side of your body.

And here are some affirmations to reinforce this empowering exercise:

I release all fear and anxiety.

I let go of resistance to positive changes in my life.

I feel more secure each day. I am centered and focused.

I am stronger in faith than in fear. I honor who I am and who I am becoming.

I am always in the right place, at the right time, with the right people, saying and doing the right thing.

I am greeted by love wherever I go.

I live in the energy of joy.

I am secure. I am safe. My future is safe and secure.

I am always divinely guided and protected.
